What is a corrugated patio roof?

Corrugated galvanised iron or steel roofing is known by many names – corrugated iron, wriggly tin, corrugated sheet metal and pailing are just a few terms. In Australia, it is commonly called corrugated iron. It can be used in patio and carport roofing to create more usable space within your home.

Corrugated iron roofing is a sheet of steel or iron that is strengthened for construction use by forcing a series of alternating ridges and grooves into the sheet. The sheet is then generally galvanized for improved weather resistance, which protects it against rust and corrosion.  The wavy construction means the sheet has increased strength for shorter areas.

The traditional shape of the corrugations is a round wavy style, but there are different dies that form a large variety of sizes and shapes.  Corrugated metal roofing can last as long as 60 years without needing replacement.

Many materials are used today in the corrugation process. The most common materials used are stainless steels and aluminium.  Other materials like fibreglass and plastic can be manufactured with the corrugated look. These products can be used with metal sheets to allow light to penetrate below.

Why are roofs corrugated?

Corrugations in the roof sheets improve the strength and make the sheets tough.  This type of roof material is very good to protect against adverse weather.

When laying the roof the corrugated sheets are over-lapped and secured down to the frame.  The corrugations of the top sheet fit snugly into the bottom sheet for a perfect fit.
